Abstract:
The rescue excavations carried out by the 17th EPKA in the province of Edessa, Pella prefecture, have located new prehistoric and Early Christian settlements in the villages of Peraia, Drossia, Karydia, and Messimeri.Other excavations are:• The completion of the investigations in the trench dug around the ancient temple which has been excavated on the site of the workers’ housing complex in Skydra and was presented in 1998. A stretch of wall in the trench to the S of the temple (Fig. la; PI. 4) was probably part of a wing which was never completed.• The discovery of part of a Roman bath (Fig. 2; PI. 5, 6, 7) in the area of the waterfalls at Edessa, i.e. outside the acropolis of the ancient city and close to the probable route of the via Egnatia.• An excavation and topographical survey in the valley S of the Edessa- Thessaloniki national highway, where there are farms belonging to Edessa and the districts of Messimeri, Proastio, and Platani (Fig. 3). To the movable finds that have been picked up hitherto in this area (PI. 8, 9) were added some later parts of agricultural facilities, such as the 2-roomed building excavated on the Miltsis plot (Figs. 3, El, 4) and the cistern (Figs. 3, E2, 5; PI. 10) found during the construction of the Edessa bypass, part of the Halkidona-Florina road. Other finds (Fig. 3, E3, E4) prove the existence of scattered facilities in the area during the Late Roman period and at the start of the Early Christian period.
