Abstract:
Three rescue excavations were carried out in the perfecture of Kastoria. At Nestorio, public works resulted in an excavation which revealed well - preserved parts of monumental buildings with a length of more than 30 m. While these buildings date from the 2nd or 3rd centuries A.D., there are various traces of earlier, as well as of later, phases of the site.At Mavrochori, near the well-known E.I.A. cemetery of Krepene, a bulldozer uncovered some undatable graves, a Roman - times well and pottery sherds of various dates.Excavation was continued for the third consecutive year at the peak sanctuary of Psalida, just west of Kastoria, ancient Celetrum. So far more than 12 votive reliefs or statuettes of Zeus, Hera and Hermes have been uncovered, mostly fragmentary, together with some votive graffiti on roof-tile fragments, small metal dedications and coins. New was also the appearance of large quantities of L.B.A. and E.I.A. pottery sherds. Two stray finds were also salvaged, an archaic bronze statuette, once attached to a large vase, and the top half of a marble, life-size grave relief of a woman. The former is a rare find of high quality, depicting a Corinthian - looking banqueter reclining on a bed. It was collected from a new site, near a mountain-peak (Alevitsa) and the Aliakmon springs, next to the Greek-Alba- nian borders. The latter is even more interesting, since it is the oldest (ca. 400 B.C.) extant figured grave relief of Upper Macedonia, comparable only to a handful of contemporary works of Lower Macedonia. It was unearthed from very near the important, if recently detected, Classical site of Pentavrysos.
