Parallel Title:
Site formation processes in Dispilio : the contribution of micromorphology
Abstract:
Preliminary micromorphological studies in the lakeside Neolithic settlement of Dispilio, Kastoria, revealed important aspects of the site’s formation processes. The excavated sedimentary sequence consists of lacustrine shore- zone facies that show a trend of decreasing depth of deposition. Nearshore wave-rippled sands are overlain by marsh silts and then by rooted muds and calcitic crusts which are characteristic of subaerial exposure. The progressive shallowing and subaerial exposure is attributed to the input of great amounts of anthropogenic material from the daily activities in the naturally deposited sediments.Several lines of evidence show that the temporal and probably the spatial organization of the settlement has been affected by the changes of the lake shore environment.
