Abstract:
Modern technology has presented us with the means of producing perfect forgeries in the field of art. That fact impels modern aesthetics to examine the case of forgeries on their own terms, i.e. aesthetically. The reason is that a perfect forgery has exactly the same aesthetic values as the original work of art. Thus aesthetic theory, or any aesthetic criteria have no validity, as they assign exactly the same aesthetic value to a forged work of art. Verification of the above is carried out by showing that there can be no aesthetic distinction between an original work of art and its perfect forgery, by comparing the main factors that influence their aesthetic value: the artist, the materials of the works created and whatever characteristics given a priori to the work of art. Moreover, that distinction cannot be founded on the opinion art experts, nor on placing the forged work of art at a low level on any aesthetic scale, because it is automatically acknowledged as a work of art and ceases to exist, aesthetically, for the reason for which it is placed at that low level, i.e. the fact that it is a forgery.
