Neoclassical architecture as a cultural link between Vienna and Athens : the architect Theophilos Hansen (1813-1891)
Author:
Abstract:
Many young and talented architects - Greeks and foreigners - were agents and activists in the service of the Neohellenic version of the classical ideal. Among this circle, Theophilos Hansen stands out with his work for many reasons: first, he spans a long period of time, 50 years’ activity in Athens (1840-1890), which thanks to his talent, he endowed with monumental buildings-landmarks; second, he remains within the eclectic architectural mode of his day, faithful to classicism, of which he became the last great exponent in Europe; third, he transfers to Vienna, that is to Central Europe, ancient Greek models as well as Byzantine forms, becoming the artistic herald of Hellenic art, as he himself experienced it, on the spot, in Greece. It is thus worthwhile following broadly the career of this Danish architect whose parallel works bridged the architectural structuring of King Othon’s Athens with the remodelling of imperial Vienna, offering a remarkable example of the transfer of experiences from one country to another, as well as proof of the cultural and artistic cohesion of Europe, one century before its political unification.
