Abstract:
The search for the components of the urban landscape and the multiple ways of their reading and analysis are the object of research of a large number of scientists from different disciplines that deal with the city. The reference to the various scientific approaches and the comparison of their results reveals a wide range of different and complementary approaches that vary by country and scientific field. The comparison of these different perspectives is a very difficult task because the reference fields and methods are very different and yet very different each time are the objectives of the study. As urban landscapes contain a wealth of different characteristics and each time a particular complexity, it is natural that there be many different ways of describing and understanding them. Their analysis should not be limited to a single perspective. Challenge arising from that point is not the choice between the various approaches but their combination. An element common to most approaches is analyzing the spatial relationships between natural and built forms and their changing relationships with people. Particularly important is the historical-geographical approach that highlights the way in which the urban landscape is formed in successive layers of history and reflects the different and distinct parts of urban landscapes. Finally a key feature of the urban landscape is “continuity and change”.
