Abstract:
Departing from a phenomenological approach to human creation, this essay builds on a revised definition of the concepts of form, space, topos (τόπος) and environment, terms typically used in architecture. Accordingly it is claimed that form constitutes the frame of space, and it is form that reveals what space has as purpose or telos (τέλος) to uncover. The concept of form fits the concept of Gestell of Heidegger as well as the concept of structural theme of Arnheim. Topos is the revelation of evolving relations to make these relations specific and visible. Adapting Arn- heim’s concept of the structural order to accommodate the phenomenon of topos, a conceptual model is developed in order to illustrate the dynamics of the revelation of topos. Topos in this model is characterized by four attributes, those being consciousness, openness, poiesis (no(- ησις) and purpose. Architecture is the contemplation for henosis (ενω- σις) of the conceptual and ideal with the sensual and tangible to the service of the human being. This postulate is systematically approached through the combination of phenomenology and geometry. Phenomenology uncovers a topos of relations that drive the process of design. Design is an act of decoding, de-symbolizing reality, which opens up in the mind of the architect. The transition from state space, the state of mind to architectural space, the space of topos, is carried out through geometry. Thus geometry becomes a language that helps revealing reality through the activity of design. Geometry is a meta-language with the use of which communication is established between the world of reality and the world of ideas, a process that Aristotle named methexis (μέθεξις). The creation process refers to the translation of relations, defined by a topos, into a work of architecture using geometry as a phenomenon. If geometry abandoned the attachment to nature of the human being falling into the virtual world of information then it loses its human norm.
