Abstract:
Contrary to the usual role of aesthetics in evaluating works of art, this essay traces back the role of aesthetics as a methodological cognitive tool, equivalent and parallel to logic, as envisioned originally by Baum- garten. Additionally, it purports to postulate the constitutive role of aesthetics in architectural design, considered as a poetic process. To that end, the practical character of aesthetic choice as the core of taste and a key notion of aesthetics is examined. Haeresis (choice), as used by Aristotle in his ethical works, denotes choice or preference and alludes to its original meaning of taking something out of many, an act of lifting the chosen one above infinite possible candidates. In this sense, choice is herewith considered as the act of bridging the gap between what is theoretically possible and what will be realized. Two kinds of aesthetic choices are discerned in architectural design. Choices of the first kind relate to sketching as a holistic analogue to the architectural work. This sketch, although rough and un-detailed is able to inform and guide the design process towards its completion. Choices of the second kind relate to all sorts of numerous partial decisions relating to functional and construction matters. These choices should aim at verifying and strengthening choices of the first kind in order for a particular architectural work to achieve ontological wholeness, a prerequisite for a work of art.Aesthetics could retain its evaluative role, but considered as a continuation of its constitutive one during the design process. In this sense, a work of art is continuously re-created in its own terms in response to cultural values of the times it survives.
