In this paper I will try to research and compare the terms “aesthetic education” and “ästhetische Erziehung”, which were used by music education theorists in the USA and in Germany in the second half of the 20th century. The term “Music Education as Aesthetic Education” dominated theory and praxis in the USA after the publication of Bennett Reimer’s book A Philosophy of Music Education: Advancing the Vision. The need of justification and advocacy from music teaching in public schools resulted in the intensive exploration of the nature and value of music. Aesthetics, as a philosophical branch, emphasizes the aesthetic character of music education and guides music teaching for its own sake in an attempt to overcome its utilitarian aims. In Germany the term was not used uniquely by music education theorists. In the second half of the 20th century it is remarkable how there is a continual intentionality to avoid any relation to music education during the Third Reich. This intention is mainly the result of the criticism from Adorno to music educators who, after the Second World War, did not realize how they were responsible for the manipulation of music teaching in the past. In Germany there were several music educational directions at the time. One of them used the term “aesthetic”, which accentuated the sensorial perception and aimed for critical awareness and maturity regarding music teaching. The discussion about aesthetic education was the catalyst for developments in theory and praxis in music education not only in both countries, but all over the world.
