Views of the urban landscape and, above all, scenes from the life in the urban environment are scarce in Greek art until 1930. This is a key differentiation of Greek artists from European modernism. The city (Athens in particular), whether as the framework and locus of social collectivity or as the individual’s experience, was late in securing its place in the awareness of Greek artists, who had a strong tradition of rural genre painting with its ideological background. The delayed urbanization of the Greek society must also be taken into consideration here. The article focuses on some painters who treated the subject of the city (Athens) in significant ways as regards both the subject matter and the plastic language. Their perceptions and interpretations of the “spectacle” of the city, of space, the human figure and cultural heritage from an aesthetic and conceptual point of view attest to various influences, both European and native. The works show in direct or indirect ways the evolution of Greek painting in the first half of the 20th century, and the shaping of Greek modernism in its various facets through the dialogue of the artists with European modernist movements as well as traditional expressions. A key feature of the iconography of the city must be noted, however, namely the absence of a modern sensitivity in the public-social area as the stage for the various manifestations of human life and their psychodynamic charge. This becomes evident in both the subject matter itself and the painterly treatment.
