Dream and cinema : three films, three approaches to life as a dream

The text is comprised of two parts. In the first part, the film-mechanism is compared to the dream-mechanism, using a psychoanalytic approach to film theory. After a short historical review of the efforts to draw parallels between cinema and dream, and a description of the main characteristics of the dream-mechanism according to Freud, Angelidi proceeds to consider three orders of similarity between the dream-mechanism and the film-mechanism: (a) both the filmic sign and the dream- sign are heterogeneous and function in a “rebus” way; (b) the flexibility of meaning production in both cases, with the constant use of displacement and condensation; (c) the notion of narration. In the second part of the text, three films are analyzed: Un chien andalou (1928) by Louis Bunuel and Salvador Dali, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) by Maya Deren and Passage (1991 ) by Bill Viola. In these films dream is not just a plot incident; it is a structural principle. All three of them use consciously the psychoanalytic knowledge of their day, incorporating the ways dreams function into their compositional strategies and techniques. Moreover, they all deal with the subject’s construction and identity. Finally, while they are usually considered as non-narrative, Angelidi argues that they propose another kind of narration, which can be understood precisely by their functional and structural similarities to the dream-mechanism.

Το κείμενο αυτό, αδημοσίευτο μέχρι σήμερα, παρουσιάστηκε στο πλαίσιο του διεθνούς συνεδρίου «Όνειρα και Οράματα», το οποίο διοργάνωσε το Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών τον Μάιο του 2008. Συνοδευόταν από προβολή κινηματογραφικών αποσπασμάτων.
