Abstract:
This study examines the trends and aesthetic issues which arise in Greek theatre at the beginning of the third millennium. Current discussion about postmodern aesthetics is presented, together with an evaluation of the increasing scenic presence of monologues and the new poetic features of drama writing. In this new fin de siècle, photographie depiction and depictive language seem to lose their power. Realism assumes new paths and, at the same time, modern technology invades theatre: polymelodic music with repetitive motifs fill the stage, electronic pop, industrial, acid house, techno and trance sounds, minimalistic or completely ‘natural’ noises, processed through computers. Moving projections on video walls realized by the support of laser technology, simulacra, holographs: all these diverse formations claim their equal share in the making of theatrical productions. Another recent appearance is so-called ‘young theatre’, produced by young artists and theatre groups aimed at addressing a youthful audience. Young theatre artists prefer working in groups and using spaces which are defined by the colours, sounds and movements of actors. The study concludes with the need for artistic creation which has previously been seen in important drama works by Kambanellis, Matessis, Ziogas and others.
