Abstract:
In the wider area of Kriaritsi Sykias in the Chalcidice Prefecture, as a result of infrastructure works undertaken during the construction of a large vacation residential complex, a total of 13 sites with antiquities were discovered in 1996 following systematic surface surveys. Rescue excavations that followed from 1997-2000 at those sites numbered 1,2, 3, 5, and 7 yielded the following: an example of a funerary tumulus of the Early Bronze Age (site 7) that is unique in Macedonia; an Early Bronze Age settlement (site 1), and agricultural installations of the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. (sites 2, 3, and 5). Results of systematic investigation at these five sites, in combination with seven others whose boundaries have been established and which have been identified in the wider area, prove that this area was chosen as a place for agricultural installations from as early as the Early Bronze Age down until the Roman period, with intervening gaps in the chronology.
