Abstract:
During the period 1997-2005, research at Aiani included the excavation of the Neolithic settlement at the site of Palla Rachi, a Late Bronze Age cemetery of Mycenaean character, the small Final Neolithic settlement at Leivadia, the eastern Hellenistic cemetery, and small rescue excavations on building-lots and at various sites, while the work of protection, enhancement, and landscaping continued, its most important aspects being the exhibit encompassing three galleries in the Archaeological Museum (500m2) and educational programs. In the rest of the Prefecture of Kozani, public works such as the construction of a road network, lignite mines and dams for the Public Waterworks (ΔΕΗ A.E.), water mains and remote heating made it necessary to carry out about 30 rescue excavations encompassing an area of about 0.80 hectare; the most important of these were at Ano Komi, Polymylos, Xi- rolimni, Pontokomi, and Mavropigi. These excavations, with finds from many historical periods, have resulted in the Prefecture of Kozani s becoming one of the most extensively-excavated in Greece, with concomitant documentation and enhancement of the new historical face of Upper Macedonia.
