Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to present the means by which the inhabitants of the Neolithic settlement of Makrygialos, Pieria, represented the human form in material culture. Our goal in this initial phase is to present the material from a site that has been excavated fairly extensively, so as to provide details about the context of these objects. In this study we present not only the figurines, which are the best known category of representations, but more generally the entire range of material culture that represents human beings. We are interested in studying the an- tropomorphic imagery of the settlement and whether there is any variatim in representation related to the difference media selected (figurines, pendants, pottery, etc.). That is, the basic question is the possibility of connecting an image with specific uses of objects (on the presupposition that different categories of objects refer to different uses). In relation to use, we turn not only to the relation between image and different category of objects, but also to the relation between image and its spatial distribution, i.e. to what extent certain categories of objects, or certain types within categories, are connected with different contexts of deposition. We endeavor to investigate whether there are differentiations in space and/or time, and what significance these might have. Finally, we attempt to situate the practices of the inhabitants of Makrygialos within the framework of evidence we possess from the wider area.
