Dion : the sanctuaries of Demeter and Asclepius: excavations during the past twenty years

During the past twenty years, excavations in the sanctuary of Demeter were continued and completed. In addition, the area between the sanctuary of Demeter and the neighboring sanctuary of Asclepius was investigated, as well as the area surrounding the temple of Asclepius. More specifically:1987-1997: the area east of the temples of the sanctuary of Demeter was investigated, and an impressive series of six altars was revealed.1998-2002: the area south of the temples of the sanctuary of Demeter was explored, and a Hellenistic stoa and an Early Christian clay kiln (beside another one already known) were discovered. South of the Hellenistic stoa, there was found an elongated building of the Imperial period, together with ancillary spaces to which the toilet (“Vespasianae”) discovered earlier belonged. 2003-2006: east of the altars of the sanctuary of Demeter, there was uncovered the wall from a stoa that probably formed the eastern boundary of the sanctuary. Between the sanctuaries of Demeter and Asclepius, a water-supplying pipe and three long walls of the Imperial period running N-S were excavated. Northeast of the temple of Asclepius, beneath these walls, a Hellenistic building phase was ascertained.In conclusion:1 ) Excavation of the sanctuary of Demeter was completed;2) a new building of the Hellenistic period was discovered in the sanctuary of Asclepius, and3) the area between the sanctuaries of Demeter and Asclepius was explored in search of evidence that would indicate how the two were joined.
