Abstract:
The first, small-scale rescue excavation at the archaeological site of Kalamoto was carried out in 1961 by F. Zafeiropoulou. Three Roman graves were investigated, and from these came a number of reused inscriptions.Since then, the writer has undertaken the following excavation efforts at the site of ancient Kalindoia (identified as such by J. Vokotopoulou):In 1983, a total of six exploratory trenches were opened at various points throughout the site. In five of these were uncovered building walls dating from the 4th century B.C. to the Roman period. In 1992, there were three additional trenches opened, the first of these at the summit of the prehistoric toumba, the second atop a neighboring trapeza, and the third in an area of the plain about 150m further north. The main result from these trenches was that habitation of the area was traced from the Neolithic to Roman periods. In 2000, following an incident of grave-robbing, a chamber tomb of a peculiar type was investigated at a considerable distance northeast of the ancient city. The most striking feature of this monument was the fact that it was two-storied, with the burial chamber hidden beneath another chamber of comparable dimensions. From 2003-2005, the greater part of the Se- basteion of Kalindoia, located approximately in the center of the city, was investigated. Until now, five large spaces in a continuous row have been explored. In this temple of Imperial worship, where Zeus, the goddess Roma, and Augustus were jointly worshipped (according to a 1st century A.D. inscription), there were found many fragments of marble states of emperors, as well as inscriptions that proved important for the history of the building.
