Abusive, swearing and derisive folk responses

The present article examines Greek abusive and derisive responses, that is the derisive reply to customary expressions or questions. The writer classifies his material in twelve fundamental categories: answers to greetings, to expressions or questions, to names, numbers, ecclesiastical phrases, to foreign words or expressions, to threats, insults, reference to objects, to everyday questions, to attacks on relatives and to erotic teasing. The writer concludes that the study of such phenomena is, in fact, an investigation of the self-awareness of the attitudes and modes of expression employed by societies.
