Abstract:
In this article, the writer examines the use and function of nicknames in a rural community and in particular, in the village Glinado of Naxos. He analyses the surnames and the naming system of the village, as this has been formed according to the kinship structure. He then systematically classifies nicknames into three categories (distinctive, abusive and unclassified). He proceeds to analyse the question of how nicknames can play the role of a) mechanisms of social control and comment; and b) mechanisms of social integration. Finally, the present essay examines both the creators of nicknames in Glinado and the bodily features that form the basis for nicknames designed to deride their victim.
