Abstract:
In Greece, the festival (panegyri) is often associated with the local community’s patron saint. It is accompanied by a range of religious and secular activities. One such secular activity is the open-air market set up next to the church on the occasion of the religious celebration. This represents the commercial aspect of the festival, and is also termed a ‘commercial fair’ (emporopanegvri or emporiko paneyiri). In this study I focus primarily on the economic dimension of the festival market, as this is manifested today. Emphasis is given to the spatial mapping of this institution, as well as to the presentation of its basic structural characteristics.Generally speaking, the markets of religious festivals are independent of each other in terms of their start, finish and general operation. However, the involvement of itinerant traders and the collectively recurring participation of the same people at some, turns them into a totality of markets that are connected and communicate internally.
