Abstract:
The article deals with the so-called fustanela films, a little-known genre, consisting of about seventy examples. They were filmed between 1914 and 1974. Their plots are set in the mountain villages and lowland of the Greek countryside. The plots are mostly based on plays and literary works, legends and traditions, folk songs, biographies and historical events of the revolution of 1821, although some films with original plots exist. These films are of interest to the student of Folklore more than any other film genre, thanks to their various aspects. These include the place and time in which the films are set, the heroes, the kinds of productive activity described, the habits and mores portrayed, speech, music, songs, dances, costumes and other features.
