Abstract:
The writer, after fieldwork throughout Greece, examines scarecrows. These are mostly cross-shaped and can take many forms, in order to ward off birds. They also stimulate the imagination of people. Thus scarecrows can represent ancient gods, monks, fish, bullfighters and many other diverse themes, which can be seen in the fields of many areas of the mainland and islands of Greece. The writer offers a review of scarecrows from antiquity to the present and stresses the importance of this form of popular art.
