Abstract:
An underwater research in the bay of Mikres and Me gales Poles gave main proofs for the harbour of the ancient city of Karthaia. Although there had been some archaeological evidence for the harbour of the city, a further exploration had not been untertaken till 1987. The study of the coast of the bay Poles, in the southeast Kea is part of the main archaeological project of the surface survey on the territory of Karthaia. The main point of this research is to define the role of the harbour for the wealth and the high status of this city. The neotectonic deformation of the bay Poles appeared with the type of vertical tectonic movements caused the change of the sea-level during the last 2400 years. This change done in two different chronological points, according to the archaelogical and morphotectonic elements caused the deterioration of the initial morphology of the coast and the sinking of the harbour of the ancient city of Karthaia.
