Abstract:
The excavation of the University of Athens has started in March 1986, at the Makriyianni area. This report, of the 1986 excavation, includes part of the finds (the rest of them will be published by Assist. Prof. N. Ghioles). The investigation started at a site just to the north of the Weiler building (Center of the Acropolis Studies), based on the evidence of the finds, which were revealed in the above building, where a section of an ancient street has been found.During the excavation, another section of this same street has been revealed. It runs NW-SE and is defined by two parallel walls, between which two early hellenistic wells and sections of three terracotta drains are preserved, running alongside the street. These constructions are associated with an earlier stone-built drainage system, which was not in use in late roman times. East of the street was excavated part of a building, with a hypocaust. It is a Roman bath, which was probably destroyed during the Herulian invasion and was rebuilt after 267 A.D. It seems that in late byzantine period it was not anymore in use.The evidence of the investigation, although the excavation is just in the beginning, has added to the research and knowledge of the topography of the region. The street was one of the most significant in the area and it is related to the street that ran from the Halade Gate of the city to the Sanctuary of Dionysos Eleuthereus and probably ran in front of the Shrine of Dionysos in Limnai. Furthermore, the site of this shrine must be located in the wider region of the excavation area, near which the Shrine of Codrus, Neleus and Basile is also situaded.
