Abstract:
This article is based on a lecture given at a General Meeting of the Hellenic Folklore Society in April 2004. It compares Greek folklore to similar branches of scholarship existing in other countries. It also sets the boundaries of folklore within the context of disciplines dealing with the same subject, namely the investigation of everyday life and culture and of the common man. The author focusses on the analysis of the relationship between folklore and social anthropology. The latter, as anthropology at home, claims some of the traditional areas of study of Greek folklore. Greece has become a favourite target of research in many American, British and French case studies which have contributed towards a considerable bibliography within the last few decades. Folklore itself, as folk culture declines and evolves into folklorismus, is gradually becoming a historical discipline and a discipline analysing contemporary changes and employing sociological and anthropological methods among others.
