Abstract:
The article deals with questions raised during the course of an international conference, on the consequences of the fall of the Iron Curain for folklore and cultural studies in general, held at the Institute of Folklore (European Ethnology) at the University of Vienna. The conference, of which the proceedings, entitled Die Wende als Wende? Orientierungen Europäischer Ethnologien nach 1989 (Vienna, Verlag des Instituts für Europäische Ethnologie, 2002), were published by Konrad Köstlin, Peter Niedermüller and Herbert Nikitsch, brought to the fore the lie of the intellectual land in the academies and universities of eastern and south-eastern Europe. The article analyses European and American developments in disciplines dealing with everyday culture and reflects critically on Greek folklore. In particular, it offers reflections on these developments in so far as they may affect Greek folklore studies. The author considers which developments Greek folklorists should follow and which they should distance themselves from, depending on the degree of similarity, or otherwise, of the content of Greek folklore. The article is therefore intended to be informative in its provision of bibliography and of various ideas regarding the position of Greek folklore in the context of cultural disciplines in contemporary Europe.
