Abstract:
St. Lazarus holds a special place in Cypriot religious and oral tradition since, according to Orthodox religious tradition, he lived in Lamaca (Kition) during his second life as bishop of this city. According to Greek folk tradition he was perpetually grim and unsmiling, as he had seen Hades. It is only in Cyprus that Lazarus is honoured as a Saint. Among all the religious songs on the subject of Lazarus found throughout the Orthodox Balkans, the Cypriot versions are the most extensive and ancient in origin and probably originate in religious hymnography. The songs are linked to the institution of professional folk rhapsodists (poiitarides) and differ in language and in rhythm from conventional Greek folk songs. Moreover, the customs of “Lazarus’ Resurrection” on the Saturday before Palm Sunday (sabbato ante palmas), which occur throughout south-eastern Orthodox Europe, also appear in their most complex form on the island of Venus. They are directly linked to the religious service in the church of St. Lazarus in Lamaca, where the ritual drama of Lazarus’ Resurrection involving a “Lazaropaido” (child Lazarus) takes place. The author offers a brief review of the debate between the eastern and the western Christian Church with regard to Lazarus’ place of residence in his second life, since Marseilles also claimed to be his home. The article also looks at St. Lazarus’ presence in iconography, in folk proverbs and in literature.
