Abstract:
The motif of life in a cage, as it appears in Greek folk song, clearly illustrates moral relationships such as those between bridegroom and bride, parents and children and the master of the house and his wife and children, in the traditional family and in traditional society. It also illustrates the real oppression felt by weaker members of the family, throughout their lives or as long as they are in the position of dependent children, whilst women are always dependent. These individuals experience an emotional and intellectual imprisonment that is intended to offer security, safety and happiness in a cage.
