Abstract:
This study examines modem Greek humorous tales of priests and the charges leveled at them, whereby the lower ranks of the church are accused mainly of ignorance and the upper levels of greed. It examines these accounts in regard to their classification and social content. It attempts to answer the question of whether they express a broader anticlericalism or simply constitute social criticism, or even merely an entertaining species of satire. The study also investigates matters of continuity and use of these motifs in literature, the cinema and the theatre which appear in these media because they are so liked at a popular level.
