The Greek translation of Bertoldo (1646) is but one of many translations of this piece of Italian literature, which spread as popular literature throughout Europe. The Greek version provided the basis for Bulgarian and Romanian translations of the original work. The fact that there were several editions of the piece, even as late as the 19th century, testifies to the tremendous success it enjoyed. Lively dialogue and an unexpectedly dramatic character lend life to the narration of whole episodes concerning the life and deeds of the wise and cunning folk hero depicted in the book. During performance before an illiterate audience, the reader would have made the dialogue even more vivid by changes of voice and gesture. Indeed, the text itself suggests a dramatic performance. The Greek people were already familiar wih the theatricality, dressing-up and extempore dialogue involved in the performance of agricultural rituals and ritual dramas. With the arrival of readings from Bertoldo, they became acquainted with the theatre and its accompaying lively dialogue long before popular and amateur theatres made their appearanc in provincial Greece.
