This study makes reference to the historical conditions under which school teachers undertook the extensive task of recording traditional folk culture during the decades immediately following the Greek revolution of 1821 against Ottoman rule and the creation of the modern Greek state. This they were encouraged to do by the first folklorists of Greece, in particular by Nicolaos Politis (1852-1921), the creator of Greek folklore.This movement is still in existence, whilst those gathering folklore material have made improvements to their methods, particularly since teaching training colleges have been upgraded to the status of universities.
