Abstract:
The motif of the duel between father and son who fail to recognize each other that ends in the death of the son or, in later, less aggressive versions, in recognition and reconciliation, is to be found from Iran, in the form of Shahnamé, to Ireland, in the form of the legend of Cuchulain and Conlae. It is also to be found as a folk song, Bylina of Ilja Murometz, in Russia and as the Hildebrandslied in Germany and, in literary form in medieval French literature, as Lai de Milun and Lai de Doon by Marie de France. In the view of Georg Baesecke and others we have here a Wanderfabel, originally a legend transmitted orally. In the view of others, the motif belongs to Indo-European peoples in common. Baesecke’s theory is not entirely valid. However, in his hypothetical reconstruction of the progress of the legend from its supposed place of origin, in the Caucasus, towards the northwest, Baesecke assumes that it passed through Greece. This suggestion is confirmed by the existence of The Song of the Son of Andronikos, which Baesecke does not mention.
