Abstract:
The present study presents a summary of research on Greek folk song during the period 1970-2000. It takes note of general and particular trends, methods and speculation, without, however, offering exhaustive reference and criticism of all the publications in question. Our study rests on three previous similar works dealing with international and comparative research on folk song: W. Puchner, “Neuere Studien zur griechischen Liedforschung”, Südost- Forschungen 41 (1982), pp. 343-355; W. Puchner, “Wege der griechischen Liedforschung”, Südost-Forschungen 48 (1989), pp. 217-235; W. Puchner, “25 Jahre Forschung zum griechischen Volkslied”, in Studien zum griechischen Volkslied, Wien 1996 (Raabser Mäarche-Reihe 10), pp. 223-294. It also rests on a series of book reviews presenting work on Greek folk song in foreign academic and folklore periodicals: Jahrbuch Für Volksliedforschungen, SUdost- Forschungen, Zeitschrift Für Balkanologie, österreichische Zeitschrift Für Volkskunde, etc. . In general, our study follows the previous German study “25 Jahre Forschung zum griechischen Volkslied”, published in 1996. It also includes all the most important studies conducted since then, drawn from book reviews and book presentations published since then. The present review is not intended to be exhaustive in terms of bibliographical references. Instead, it takes note of characteristic research trends, discussion of methodological problems in research that have arisen over the period in question and of speculation on these issues. This speculation constitutes overall a new and different orientation for traditional research into Greek folk song. The usefulness of such generally synoptic or extensive reviews is obvious. Beyond their general direction, they also offer a forum for the discussion of particular issues that are frequently overlooked and left without comment. A shift away from the collection of variations of folk songs to the interpretation of the texts of such songs is to be observed. As regards aesthetic and literary matters, there is increasing interest in thought on classification of folk song material and in investigation of the social environment of the song, that is, in matters of when, by whom, how, why, to whom, with what musical instruments, with what dance, or with what music the song was performed, and so on.
