Kephaleniaka III : news from prehistoric Cephallonia

I. Reconsideration of the prehistoric tombs and constructions excavated in 1909 by Kavvadias at Kokkolata of Krane points to the possibility that we have there first a MH tumulus with cist graves, and later the two LH Illb small tholoi and the “ shaft ” graves opened into it. The apsidal funeral construction similar to the ones found in Oekopeda in Cephallonia, Messenia and Attica ( Marathon ), must also belong, to the ME period. Stress is given to the possibility that these ME constructions ( tumuli, apsidal, etc. ) are of a southern origin ( Cycladic ? ) and not northern ( Kurgan ), as believed by Hammond and others.II. The problems of Mycenaean ( LH IIIb-c ) Cephallonia are exposed. The importance of the area of Krane is stressed, with all the small cemeteries scattered around the fertile plain of Kra- naia. The center of this Mycenaean community, possibly a small kingdom,was the acropolis of Krane, from where comes an interesting amygdaloid seal- stone, now in the National Museum in Athens. Its original provenance from the mainland, or the Cyclades ( Melos ? ), proves once more that Cephallonia had some external connections even during the LH IIIc period.
