Abstract:
Recent study of the material from old excavations, now in the National Museum in Athens, has led to the identification of an interesting group of offerings from some Doric sanctuaries : A number of dedicatory bronze whips from the sanctuary of Apollo Korynthos in Messenia, excavated by F. Versakis, and from the oracle of Zeus at Dodona, excavated by C. Carapanos, have been identified, dating in the Hellenistic period.Literary evidence in the form of ancient proverbs connected the whip with the activities of ancient Corcyraeans. “ Κερκνραία μάστιξ ” — an early form of the proverb — referred to the cruelty and arrogance attributed to them by therest of the Greeks. On the other hand, “ Κερκυραίων μάστιξ ” was connected with a late 4th cent. B.C. dedication of the Corcyraeans at Dodona and was used to imply talkativeness ( cf. Δω- δωναϊον χαλκεΐον).Further study is needed to detect the deeper meaning of such a find in sanctuaries, ppssibly having an apotropaic sense, or being a dedication of some special officials ( paidonomoi, etc. ).
