Abstract:
A group of ancient graves was excavated in the building plot situated at the junction of Vouliagmenis, Trivo- nianou and Eupompou Streets. The existence of a necropolis in the area of Kynosarges had already been known to us from earlier excavations, which revealed parts of an ancient road and a large number of graves chronologically assignable from the Classical to the Early Christian period.Forty graves (plans 1-2; fig. 1) have been investigated in all; their chronological classification ranges from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period. Nine of these graves are dated to the 8th century B.C., two to the 5th century B.C., six to the Hellenistic times, and one to the Roman age, while the remaining twenty-two are unidentified owing to a total absence of evidence regarding their dating. All graves were hewn into the natural bedrock ( kimi- lia ), except for one which was built with stones and mortar on the bedrock. The shafts measure from 2.00 X 1.40 m. to 0.80 x 0.50 m.Burials include cremations and inhumations. In spite of successive destructions or pillaging, the graves yielded, when cleared, a considerable quantity of pottery, mostly skyphoi and pyxides, as well as jewellery, of which the most wrought remarkable item is a gold band with animal representations (figs. 2-13).The significance of this excavation lies in the discovery of the fact that this area was furnished in Geometric times with an important cemetery, about which only insufficient evidence is available.
