Abstract:
This is a first presentation of two inscriptions found recently in the area of Larisa. The first (figs. 1 and 2 ) was found in the city of Larisa and is the upper part of a decree of the Thessalian Confederacy. It bears a decision to send Kleitos, son of Basaneus, from Gyrton, as a representative of Thessalians, to the city of Teos, in Asia Minor, in order to invite judges from that city to solve some trials of the Confederacy, a custom not unusual in the 2nd c. B.C.Unfortunately only the first 13 lines of the inscription are preserved and so we are not informed about the kind of trials nor the results of the mission. An important point in the inscription is that the citizens of Teos are called «συγγενείς», i.e. relatives or of common origin with Thessalians ( 2nd line of the inscription ). As a matter of fact the relationship is traced back to Middle Helladic times, when Minyans and Athamanes from Thessaly moved to Boeotia; thence, round 1200 B.C., under the pressure of Thracians, Athamanes moved to Attica, together with Minyans from Boeotia; they were among the first colonists of Teos in Asia Minor ( Pausanias, VII, 3, 6 ).The inscription is dated to the middle of 2nd c. B.C.The second inscription (fig. 3 ) is a grave stele found at Crannon. The text is in verse ( dactylic hexameter ) and the representation recalls many similar ones in Larisa Museum, which seem to belong to a local workshop.Though the particular elements of the representation are an inheritance from the ancient grave stelae the style seems to presage the one of Early Christian and Byzantine Art.This grave stele is dated to the end of 2nd or beginning of 3rd c. A.D.
