Abstract:
A cluster of four small chamber tombs was excavated on the east-south-east edge of the plain of Merenda, at Markopoulo, Attica. The tombs are fairly sparsely distributed and have a common orientation. They have long dro- moi, and their burial chambers are roughly elliptical in plan and of small dimensions. In only one case was the roof preserved. The finds point to the rural character of the community to which the cemetery belonged. The pottery is probably of local manufacture. No great variety is observed in the shapes and decoration. A figurine of a bovine and abronze razor stand out amongst the finds. The material has great similarity with finds from nearby Kopreza and Perati, though it belongs at the same time to the Mycenaean koine and has features in common not only with other sites in Attica (Vourvatsi, Vari, Varkiza, Agora, Elefsina), but also with the Argolid, Achaia and Rhodes. It is a small family cemetery containing about ten burials, the use of which began as early as LH IIIA2 and reached its culmination in early LHIIIB-C.
