Rhodes : evidence for the history of the island through the fact of death. The funerary topography of the island from the 4th to the beginning of 16th century

The sites at which tombs have been excavated or located, both in Rhodes town (medieval and modem) and in the countryside, were assembled and formed the basis for the following conclusions relating to the funerary topography of the island. In the area of the medieval town, the tombs (built cist tombs) and free burials, of which there are a great number, were located inside and outside churches, and range in date from the Byzantine period down to the 16th century. The number of Christian tombs uncovered by excavation in the modem town is relatively limited. Finally, seven sites of organised cemeteriesof the Early Christian period have been identified in the countryside, along with a large number of tombs (jar-burials, tile graves, and built cist tombs), dating from the Late Roman-Early Christian period.The continuous occupation of the limited area of the medieval town accounts to some extent for the discovery of later levels of burials, whereas in the countryside, the movement of settlements from ancient times to the present day, largely for reasons of security against enemy raids, has led to many burial sites remaining untouched over the centuries.
