Abstract:
A sanctuary has been uncovered on the peninsula of Mount Athos, north-west of the modern settlement of Nea Roda, which had been in use continuously from the late Archaic to the early Hellenistic periods. Two buildings and part of a third have so far been excavated, and scattered building remains associated with the sanctuary have been discovered throughout the entire area. The first building excavated is an Archaic oikos oriented east-west, with the entrance at the east. It stands on a granite podium and has limestone walls, the outer faces of which are adorned with hexagon pattern. Outside the building, along the two long sides, was discovered a destruction level of Corinthian tiles, and also terracotta akrote- ria, in the form of figures of Nike. The second building was located to the north-east of the first. It has the shape of a temple oriented east-west, with the entrance at the east. It consists of a pronaos with a porch and a cella with three entrances, a bench, and a table for bloodless offerings which was probably also a cult hearth. Inside the temple were found a marble head of Helios, a marble female head, a cylindrical terracotta altar and several clay vases in the shape of an octahedron with a spout and a small strap handle, presumably for ritual use.The sanctuary is connected with the two ancient cities in the area, Sane, the colony of Andros, and Ouranopolis, which was founded by Kassander’s brother Alexar- chos in 315 BC.
