Abstract:
The marble bust of Dionysos, an interesting find from Drama which was formerly on display in the Thessaloniki Museum now adorns the new Archaeological Museum of Drama. An eclectic work of the early Antonine period, it was made by an artist influenced by the tradition of the great sculptural models of the 5th c. BC.The study of the sculpture suggests that it may be compared typologically with apopular type of bearded god (Curtius's type A), which is represented by a group of marble heads from Roman copies.Affinities can also be discerned with two Roman works: a) the head of the classicising statue 295 in the Munich Glyptothek; b) the head that was formely set on the torso of the idealistic statue of Dionysos no. 180, also in the Munich Glyptothek.
