Abstract:
The black-figure column krater published comes from the ancient cemetery at Thermi (formerly Sedes) near Thessaloniki, and was used as a cinerary urn. On one side it has the mythical subject of the hunt for the Calydonian boar. The composition is linear and presents five heroes side by side, with Atalanta at the extreme right. A sixth, dead huntsman lies beneath the boar. The rear of the vase has a scene of two confronted boars with an aquatic birdbetween them. Beneath each handle is a large bird (eagle with spread wings), and each of the horizontal panels above the handles has the head of a bearded man. The style and details of the treatment of the figures on the krater, and the individual motifs of the decoration, betray the hand of the Attic painter Lydos. The krater from Thermi is one of his earliest works and may be dated to about 560 BC.
