Abstract:
During the excavation of the levels underlying the complex of Galerius, the trenches in the North Corridor yielded a large number of late Hellenistic and Roman lamps. They date from the 1st c. BC to the 2nd c. AD. The majority of the lamps were made in a mould, with the exception of one which is wheel-made. They are mostly lamps imported from workshops in Asia Minor, Italy or North Africa. From Asia Minor come lamps of Ephesos type, with grey clay, richly decorated mainly with floral motifs. The lamps of Italian provenance, which are single-nozzled ordouble-nozzled with tendrils at the nozzle, have a lustrous red slip of excellent quality. Stamps preserved on the bases of the lamps have also furnished the names of owners or the workshops that made them, which were at Knidos and in central Italy or Carthage in the lst-2nd c. AD.The absence of lamps dating from the 3rd c. AD is indicative of the destruction visited upon the site by an extensive fire in the middle of the 3rd c. AD, and of the chronological vacuum until the beginning of the 4th c. AD when the palace of Galerius was erected.
