Abstract:
In the autumn of 1995 a hoard of 16 silver tetradrachms was found on the acropolis of ancient Leibethra, with the following composition: Perseus 1, Athens (New Style) 14, and Macedonia under Roman rule (ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΗΣ/Club) 1. Its concealment is dated to the end of the 150s BC. The hoard sheds new light on the numismatic evidence in Macedonia in the 2nd c. BC: it helps to solve not only the problem of the date of the stephanephoroi tetradrachms, supporting the thesis proposed by O. M0rkholm, but also that of the issues of Amphipolis under Roman rule. Italso helps towards the final arrangement of earlier hoards from Macedonia (IGCH 479, 480 and 481), and thus illuminates the question of the circulation of silver coinage during this same period, and at the same time puts the question of the introduction to Macedonia of Athenian New Style tetradrachms in a new light. Finally, it contributes to the debate on the withdrawal of royal issues after the battle of Pydna, and, in the light of the arrangement referred to above, supports an early date for the issues of Thasos and Maroneia.
