Abstract:
A burial complex of Early Christian date, discovered in the building plot at 74 Nikita street, is part of the south-west cemetery of the ancient city. Of the ten graves brought to light, seven contained two bodies. The graves were roofed with marble architectural members (closure slabs, thresholds, and impost block, etc.) in second use.The presence in them of the closure slabs, which date from the 5th c. AD, presupposes the destruction and abandonment of the churches in the town from which they came, and the pairs of contemporary double burials points to a high death rate caused by some natural disaster that struck the town. The excavation evidence permits us to associate the creation of the cemetery with the burial of the victims of the earthquake that destroyed Patras in AD 552.
