Abstract:
A rescue excavation carried out at Ayia Irini near the port of Thasos uncovered the ruins of an Early Christian basilica dating from the 5th or 6th c. The sections of walls brought to light are consistent with its being a three- aisled timber-roofed basilica with a narthex and a courtyard with three porticoes, of the type commonly found on Thasos. The existence of a mosaic floor and marble paving slabs were noted in the south aisle. The church was destroyed in the 6th c. AD, probably by fire, and it is possible that after this destruction only part of the courtyard was used. The pottery (collected on the site or discovered in a stratified context) ranges in date from pre-Christian times to the beginning of the 7th c. AD. Fragmens of glass vases and metal objects were found, as well as pieces of marble architectural sculptures of Early Christian date. The coins discovered date from the 4th and 5th c. AD.
