Abstract:
The neolithic caves A and B' Kouveleiki belong to a system of karstic formations developed in the contact between overlying dolomitic limestones and underlying metavolcanic rocks. The caves are in a prominent position at the eastern flank of the Evrotas valley, in an area considered up to now as not suitable for prehistoric settlement. An attempt is made here to place the settlement in its geological context. The deposits of A' Kouveleiki can be distinguished morphologically in two major units: the inner part is of karstic origin whereas the outer represents the entrance facies of the cave. A stratigraphic reconstruction of the entrance facies is presented as well as comments on the formation of the sites deposits. A sequence of ash layers characterizes the northern section of the caves entrance deposits. Small distinct red clay loam deposits of allochthonous origin are interpreted as anthropogenic formations. Β' Kouveleiki cave has also two different sedimentary units. The formation of the inner unit is probably due to repeated surges of sediment-laden water that spread out from a crevice on the ceiling of the cave. The archaeological material incorporated in these layers is not in situ and has been eroded away from the central area of the cave. The outer unit of B' Kouveleiki cave is interpreted as a small-scale debris flow. Its origin is attributed to slurry like sediment flow on the inclined metamorphic substrate of the cave floor due to water saturation after violent rainfall. This debris flow is a very small- scale event with minor movement, so the archaeological content is not considered strongly disturbed. A palaeosol was found as well as some thin remnants of occupational floors.
