Artemis Paphrakia

A votive inscription of the early Hellenistic period, incised on the rim of a bronze hydria dating from the second half of the 5th c. BC, preserves the adjective Paphrakia, used as an epithet of Artemis, which is otherwise unattested. The presence on the same vase of an earlier votive inscription in honour of Demeter, taken together with other epi- graphic and dialectic evidence, suggests that the hydria should be assigned to an Arka- dian sanctuary.The adjective Paphrakia is connected etymologicallywith Paphra (a city on the headland of this name on the Black Sea), not far from the mouth of the river Halys) and Paphlago- nia (an area of Pontos to the west of the lower reaches of the Halys). This suggests that the epithet and the cult of the goddess with this name, are probably to be connected with the hedos of Hekate, which was on the Pa- phlagonian coast near the Halys, and where, according to the Apollonios’ Argonautica, Medea offered sacrifices to the goddess during the Argonauts’ return from Colchis.
