Abstract:
During the excavation at Philotas, Fiorina, in 1996, two pottery kilns dating from the Hellenistic and Roman periods were investigated, and also three smaller kilns, the date of which is not certain. In addition to these, the sites of two more kilns were located, which have not yet been investigated.Pottery kiln K3 is in a better state of preservation than the others. It is a two-storey structure with an underground burning chamber and a firing chamber. A large part of the vaulted dromos is preserved, though the barrel vault has collapsed, and the lower burning chamber is almost intact, as too is the grille on which the products for firing were placed. The length of the kiln is 3.70 and the width 2.70 m., while the burning chamber is 1 m. high. The burning chamber is a solid, monumental structure. It is traversed by three parallel partition walls that create a wide central corridor with two others at the sides, and at the same time act as effective supports for the grille. From the finds, especially those from waste pits around the kiln, the monument seems to have been in use from the end of the Hellenistic and during the first centuries of the Roman period. It produced mainly tiles and large pots. The excavation of this area has not yet been completed, and questions relating to the size and specialisation of the pottery workshops at Philotas are still unanswered. It is in any case only during recent years that products of the workshops in this area have begun to come to light.
