Abstract:
The historic kellion of Dionysios of Fourna, dependency of the Koutloumousi monastery, is located at the centre of the Athonite capital, a short distance from the church of the Protaton, on the road leading to the ko- naki of the Vatopedi monastery. Its founding is dated to the early 14th century, according to archival information drawn from documents in the Koutloumousi monastery. The chapel of the kellion, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (Timios Prodromos), occupies the upper southeast corner of the building complex, which is developed on two storeys and includes cells, a refectory, an ar- chontariki, auxiliary areas, an ossuary and premises for a painting workshop and shops in the once thriving commercial centre of Ka- ryes. A painted donor inscription recordsthat the chapel in its present form was built and decorated in 1711 by the hieromonk and icon-painter Dionysios of Fourna and his entourage. It follows the architectural type of compact cruciform plan with blind dome, which was very widely diffused in small churches throughout the Postbyzantine period. It is single-aisled, rectangular and belongs to class Δ.5. in the classification of the kellion churches on Mount Athos first proposed by the Academician Pavlos Mylonas. Both the architecture and the rich painted decoration of the chapel, and the influential personality of its founder Dionysios, author of the renowned «painter’s manual», distinguish the kellion of the Timios Prodromos as one of the most important such monuments of Mount Athos.
